Rocky Branch Trail Guide: Belmont's Hidden Singletrack Gem

By Shop Crew

Rocky Branch Trail in Belmont, NC is a compact, well-built singletrack system with beginner-friendly flow, legit tech, and easy access from Charlotte.

55 acres. Multiple zones. Tons of replay value.

It's got flow. It's got tech. It's got a community that actually cares about maintaining and riding these trails. And it's only 12 miles west of uptown Charlotte, which means you can sneak in a session before work if you're motivated (or slightly unhinged, we support both).

Why Rocky Branch Deserves Your Attention

Here's the thing: Rocky Branch doesn't scream for attention. It's not some massive trail network with a fancy visitor center and a gift shop. It's just... really good singletrack that was built by locals who know what makes a trail fun.

The system got a glow-up in 2020 when they brought in machines to add flow trails alongside the original hand-cut singletrack from 2013. The result? A perfect blend of old-school technical challenge and modern rippable berms that'll have you giggling on every descent.

You've got five skill-specific zones that let you choose your own adventure, whether you're just getting into mountain biking or you're hunting for mandatory drops and rock gardens.

Getting There (It's Easy, We Promise)

Rocky Branch connects Belmont and Cramerton, and you've got options for where to start your ride.

Main entrance (Belmont side): 220 Woodrow Ave. About 35 parking spots, a water fountain, portable toilet, and a changing stall. This is your hub, start here if it's your first time.

Cramerton entrance (Eagle Road): Gets you straight to the Eagle Trail if you want to session that flow immediately.

Both entrances are about a mile from local shops and food, so you can grab a post-ride burger without driving across town. We love efficient logistics!

The Trail Breakdown (Let's Get Into It)

Canopy Trail: Your Gateway Drug

Distance: 1.15 miles
Difficulty: Green (beginner-friendly)
Vibe: "I'm having so much fun I might cry"

If you're new to mountain biking, or you're bringing a friend who's never ridden singletrack, start here. Canopy Trail is designed to teach you the fundamentals without scaring you off the sport forever.

You've got optional jumps, berms, rock gardens, tabletops, drops, and transfers. Everything is optional, which means you can roll the features or send them depending on your mood (and skill level).

The trail climbs alongside Rocky Branch Creek, then gives you two descent options that merge back at the hub. Perfect for lapping if you want to session specific features until you nail them.

Boulder Trail: Time to Step It Up

Distance: 1.1 miles
Difficulty: Blue/Black
Vibe: "I think I'm good at this... wait, what's that rock feature?"

This is where Rocky Branch shows its teeth a little. Boulder Trail splits into a shorter black-diamond option and a longer blue option, so you can pick your poison.

The black route features a mandatory 16-inch drop and a gnarly rock section called Devils Dominoes (yes, that's the actual name, and yes, it's as fun/terrifying as it sounds).

Multiple rock gardens, mandatory drops, jumps, berms, and skinnies keep things interesting. This is where you'll actually build skills instead of just rolling through, you need commitment and line choice here.

Eagle Trail: Pure Flow Energy

Distance: 0.6 miles
Difficulty: Green
Vibe: "WHEEEEE!"

Machine-built flow at its finest. Access this from the Cramerton entrance and just... enjoy yourself.

Sweeping berms. Table tops. Jumps. Skinnies. An advanced drop if you're feeling spicy. It's a one-way trail, so you'll need to loop back via the Rocky Branch Trail to session it again (which you will, because it's that good).

This is the trail you bring your gravel bike-riding friends to when they ask, "What's the big deal about mountain biking?"

Euler's Way & Legacy Loops: For the Adventurous

Want more distance and technical challenge? These intermediate-to-advanced trails connect the zones and add mileage to your ride.

They're the OG hand-cut singletrack from 2013, so expect tighter turns, root sections, and less "flow machine" energy. It's a different flavor, more raw, more natural, and it's a great contrast to the newer machine-built sections.

The Tech and the Flow (Why This Place Works)

Here's what makes Rocky Branch special: it doesn't choose between technical challenge and flowy fun. It gives you both.

You've got rock gardens that'll test your wheel placement and bike handling. Then you've got bermed turns where you can rail through at speed and feel like a hero.

Multiple bridges cross Rocky Branch Creek (hence the name, shocking, we know). The terrain rolls gently enough for beginners but climbs just enough to make intermediate riders work for their descents.

And that pump track near the trailhead? Perfect for warming up or teaching kids how to generate speed without pedaling.

The Community Vibe (This Is the Good Stuff)

Trails don't maintain themselves. Rocky Branch has a crew of locals who keep it running and rideable.

Expect friendly trail traffic, quick hellos, and plenty of shared beta on which lines are riding best.

Why Rocky Branch Is Perfect for Skill Building

Here's the honest truth: Rocky Branch won't intimidate you off your bike, but it also won't let you coast (literally or figuratively).

The green trails give you features you can session safely. The blue/black options push your limits without being reckless. And the variety means you can focus on specific skills, berms one day, rock gardens the next, drops when you're feeling brave.

It's like a choose-your-own-adventure book, except you're on a bike and the adventure involves adrenaline and dirt.

Gear Up and Go

Before you head out, make sure your bike is trail-ready! If you've been putting off that brake bleed or your suspension feels sketchy, swing by Spirited Cyclist and let us dial everything in.

We service everything, mountain bikes, gravel bikes, even e-bikes (because e-bike repair is a thing we absolutely do, and yes, e-MTBs rip at Rocky Branch). Fresh brake pads and properly tuned suspension make a HUGE difference on technical terrain.

The Bottom Line

Rocky Branch Trail in Belmont is compact, well-maintained, and FUN for a wide range of riders.

If you're nearby and want a quick, quality singletrack session, it belongs on your short list.
