Airline Bike Park is Charlotte’s free, volunteer-run spot for gravity lines AND flowy XC — perfect for leveling up your riding fast! 🚀
Meet Airline Bike Park, the city's not-so-secret weapon for gravity junkies, flow-trail fanatics, and anyone who's ever wanted to catch some air without driving three hours into the mountains.
And here's the kicker: it's completely free.
The New Kid That's Already Stealing the Show
Airline isn't just another trail system. It's Charlotte's answer to the question, "Where can I session jumps, rip berms, and actually get better at riding?"
The park sprawls across 8 miles and 22 trails, split into two distinct personalities: cross-country single track for the endurance crowd, and the Gravity Terminal for those of us who like our trails steep, fast, and punchy.
Think of it as Charlotte's mini bike park, without the lift ticket price tag. 🎢

Gravity Terminal: Where the Magic Happens
Let's talk about the star of the show.
The Gravity Terminal is a dedicated jump-and-tech zone that's been purpose-built for progression. Short downhill runs. Table tops. Gap jumps. Technical features that'll make you sweat (in a good way).
It's where intermediate riders level up and advanced riders session lines until the sun goes down... or until 6 PM when the gates lock. More on that later!
The beauty of the Gravity Terminal? You don't need a shuttle vehicle or a full-suspension rig with 180mm of travel. A solid trail bike or even a well-built gravel bike with some cushion can handle the flow sections. (Though we'd recommend something burlier if you're eyeing those bigger jumps!)
Named trails like Auto-Pilot, Spruce Goose, and Kitty Hawk nod to the aviation theme, because apparently, catching air on a bike and catching air in a plane have something in common. 🛩️
The XC Side: 4 Miles of Flowy Single Track
Not everyone's here for the huck-to-flat life. We get it!
The cross-country section delivers approximately 4 miles of flowy, rolling single track that's perfect for building fitness, dialing in your cornering, or just enjoying a solid cardio session in the woods.
The terrain here is less "launch yourself into orbit" and more "smooth, swoopy goodness." It's a great warm-up before you hit the Gravity Terminal, or a chill solo ride when you just want to spin and think.
Total descent? About 4 miles with 819 feet of vertical relief. Not Alpine, but enough to get your legs burning and your heart rate up.

Trail Variety: Something for Everyone
Here's where Airline really shines: the mix.
You've got 11–22 documented trails (depending on who's counting) ranging from beginner-friendly greens to spicy blacks that'll test your bike handling.
Some standouts:
- Co-Pilot: A flowy intermediate line that's perfect for getting your rhythm dialed
- Split-S: Technical enough to keep you honest, but rideable for most intermediate folks
- Pursuit: Fast, punchy, and super rewarding when you nail the line
- Baggage Claim: Because every bike park needs a trail name that makes you chuckle
There's even talk of a new beginner-friendly green jump line coming soon, which means even newer riders can start learning to get off the ground safely. 🙌
The Catch: Hours, Weather, and Volunteers
Okay, here's the reality check.
Airline is free because it's volunteer-maintained by the Tar Heel Trail Blazers. These folks are the real MVPs, and they're the reason Charlotte has a bike park at all.
But that means the park operates on a limited schedule: weekends and weekdays when volunteers can open and close the gates.
Gates lock at 6:00 PM sharp. No exceptions. And night riding? Not permitted.
The Gravity Terminal can also experience extended closures during wet weather to prevent trail damage. Nobody wants to session a jump line that's been turned into a slip-and-slide by a dozen riders who didn't check the conditions first!
Pro tip: Before you load up the car, check the Tar Heel Trail Blazers website for current park status. It's weather-dependent, and they'll post updates if the trails are closed or delayed. 🌧️
Why Airline is a Big Deal for the Charlotte Scene
For years, Charlotte riders had to choose: drive out to Pisgah, BRP, or DuPont for real descents... or session the same local XC loops over and over.
Airline changes that equation.
It gives local riders a place to practice jumps, dial in tech skills, and session features without burning half a tank of gas. It's the kind of spot where you can hit after work (if the gates are open!) and still be home for dinner.
And for newer riders? It's a low-pressure environment to learn. You're not paying for a lift ticket. You're not surrounded by sponsored athletes lapping you. You can session the same feature fifty times until you nail it, and nobody's judging.
That's the magic of a community-built, volunteer-run park. ✨
What to Bring (and What to Leave at Home)
DO bring:
- A bike that can handle jumps and roots (full-suspension trail bike is ideal, but hardtails work too!)
- A helmet. Always. Non-negotiable.
- Water: there's no aid station out there
- A spare tube and a pump (or CO2)
- Sunscreen if you're hitting the flow trails on a sunny day
LEAVE at home:
- Your ego (everyone starts somewhere)
- Your e-bike if it's not trail-legal in NC (check local regs!)
- Your speaker (seriously, nobody wants to hear your playlist)
If you're rolling an e-bike and it's legal for the trails, Airline's a blast: especially for lapping the Gravity Terminal without having to pedal back up every time. Just make sure it's in good working order before you head out. (Need an e-bike repair or tune-up before your session? We've got you covered.) ⚡
Prepping Your Rig for the Park
Airline's jump lines and tech features will expose every weak point in your bike setup.
Squishy brakes? You'll know by the second descent.
Underinflated tires? That berm's gonna let you know real quick.
Loose headset? Enjoy the handlebar death rattle.
Before you session Airline (or any bike park), swing by the shop for a quick safety check. We'll make sure your road bikes, gravel bikes, or trail rigs are dialed and ready to handle whatever you're throwing at them. 🚲🔧
The Bigger Picture: Trails Build Community
Airline isn't just a bike park. It's a gathering spot for Charlotte's growing MTB scene.
You'll see families teaching kids to ride. Intermediate riders cheering each other on as they clear a new jump. Advanced folks building confidence before they head to bigger parks.
And that's what the Trail Spirit series is all about: celebrating the local trails that bring riders together, push us to grow, and remind us why we fell in love with bikes in the first place.
So whether you're hunting for mountain bike trails near me or just looking for a new spot to session, Airline Bike Park deserves a spot on your hit list.
