How to Fix a Puncture and Keep Your Ride Moving

A flat tire can turn a Lake Norman loop, a gravel ride, or a quick neighborhood spin into a long walk home. Knowing how to fix puncture trouble on your bike means you can make a smart call at the roadside: repair it, install a spare tube, add air and ride carefully, or call it a day before a small problem becomes a damaged tire or wheel.

The right repair depends on what is actually flat. Most riders are dealing with a punctured inner tube, but tubeless tires, worn rim tape, damaged valve stems, and sidewall cuts can create similar symptoms. Start with a calm inspection. The faster you identify the source, the less likely you are to repeat the flat five minutes later.

Start by finding the source of the flat

Before removing the wheel, look over the tire. A thorn, staple, piece of wire, or small shard of glass may still be embedded in the tread. Pull it out only after you know where it is, and remember its location relative to the valve. That detail can help you match the hole in the tube to the tire and find the culprit.

If the tire has gone completely soft, add a little air if you have a pump or CO2 inflator. Listen for a hiss and run your hand carefully near the tire to feel escaping air. Avoid sweeping a bare finger quickly across the tread - a tiny piece of glass can be sharp enough to cut you.

A puncture on the outer side of the tube usually points to something in the tire. A hole on the inner side, facing the rim, may indicate damaged rim tape, a protruding spoke hole, or a sharp edge around the valve hole. Two small, parallel holes are often a pinch flat, sometimes called a snakebite. These happen when the tire compresses hard against the rim, usually after a pothole, curb strike, or rock.

What to carry before you need it

Every rider should have a simple flat-repair setup on the bike, not buried in the garage. At a minimum, carry tire levers, a spare tube that matches your wheel size and valve type, a pump or inflator, and a small patch kit. For tubeless riders, add plugs and a plug tool. A compact multitool is useful if wheel removal requires it.

Road, gravel, mountain, and e-bike riders all benefit from this kit. The difference is usually capacity. Larger tires may need more sealant, a larger spare tube, or a higher-volume pump. E-bike tires can be especially stubborn to remove and reinstall, so practice at home with the exact tires on your bike.

How to fix a puncture in a tube

For most roadside flats, replacing the tube is faster and more dependable than applying a patch. Save the damaged tube, then patch it later at home if the hole is repairable. That keeps your ride moving and gives you a backup for the next outing.

Remove the wheel and tire carefully

Shift to the smallest rear cog before removing a rear wheel. If your bike uses rim brakes, open the brake release if necessary so the tire can pass through. With disc brakes, do not squeeze the brake lever once the wheel is out. The brake pads can close together and make reinstallation difficult.

Deflate the tube completely, then use a tire lever to lift one bead of the tire over the rim. Start opposite the valve, because the tire is usually tightest around the valve area. Once one side is free, pull out the tube, beginning at the valve stem.

Inspect the tire before inserting anything new

This is the step riders skip when they are rushed, and it is why a brand-new tube sometimes goes flat immediately. Slowly run a cloth or the inside of a glove around the tire casing, feeling for debris. Check the outside tread and the sidewalls in good light. If you find a sharp object, remove it.

Also inspect the rim tape. It should fully cover spoke holes and sit flat against the rim. If the tape is torn, shifted, or narrow enough to expose a spoke hole, a new tube alone will not solve the issue.

Install the replacement tube

Put just enough air in the new tube to give it shape. Insert the valve through the rim first, then tuck the tube into the tire all the way around. Push the tire bead back onto the rim with your hands whenever possible. Tire levers can pinch the tube during installation, so use them only for the final tight section and with care.

Before inflating, go around both sides of the wheel and make sure no part of the tube is trapped under the tire bead. Push the valve upward into the tire briefly, then pull it back into place. This helps prevent the tube from getting caught at the valve area.

Inflate gradually, checking that the tire is seated evenly around the rim. Most tires have a molded line near the bead that should appear consistently above the rim edge. Inflate to the pressure range printed on the tire, adjusted for your weight, riding surface, and tire volume.

Patch the old tube at home

A small, clean hole in a tube is usually worth patching. Locate the leak by inflating the tube and listening, feeling, or holding it near your cheek. Mark the hole, roughen a small area around it with the sandpaper from the patch kit, and apply vulcanizing fluid if your kit uses it. Let the fluid dry until tacky, then press the patch firmly in place.

Pre-glued patches are convenient for emergencies, but traditional patches with vulcanizing fluid generally hold up better for a long-term repair. Replace the tube instead of patching it if it has a split near the valve, multiple close-together holes, a large tear, or brittle rubber.

Tubeless punctures need a different approach

A properly set up tubeless tire can seal many small punctures on its own. When you hear the familiar spray of sealant, keep the wheel turning and position the hole near the bottom of the tire so sealant can reach it. Add air and check whether it holds.

For a hole that will not seal, insert a tubeless plug. The plug fills the opening while the sealant finishes the seal. Trim any excess only if needed, reinflate, and ride cautiously. A large sidewall cut, a broken bead, or a tire that will not stay seated calls for a tube or a replacement tire.

If you need to install a tube in a tubeless tire, remove the puncturing object and any plug that is in the way. Make sure the tire is clear of sealant clumps and sharp debris. You may need to remove the tubeless valve from the rim before fitting the tube. It is messy, but it can save a ride.

When a puncture is really a tire problem

Not every flat is repairable at the roadside. Stop and inspect more closely if the tire has a deep sidewall cut, exposed casing threads, a bulge, a bead that will not seat, or a tread area worn nearly smooth. A tire boot can temporarily reinforce a small cut from inside the tire, but it is an emergency measure, not a permanent solution for fast road riding or aggressive trail use.

Repeated flats also deserve attention. They may mean your pressure is too low for the terrain, your tires are overdue for replacement, your rim tape needs work, or your tubeless sealant has dried out. Riders who frequently hit rough pavement, gravel, roots, and curbs often benefit from wider tires, tougher casings, or a thoughtful pressure adjustment rather than simply adding more air.

Know when to bring the bike in

There is no prize for forcing a repair when something does not look right. If a wheel is damaged, a tubeless tire will not seat, the rim tape is suspect, or you are getting repeat punctures without finding a cause, a technician can diagnose the issue quickly. This is particularly worthwhile for e-bikes, carbon wheels, and bikes with internal gear hubs or unfamiliar axle systems.
