The secret to a perfect group ride isn't just about having the highest FTP or the flashiest kit: it’s about TRUST. When you’re flying down the road at 22mph, inches away from the rider in front of you, you’re basically entering a silent contract. You trust them to lead you safely, and they trust you not to overlap wheels or do something unpredictable!
Being a "Roadie" that everyone wants to draft behind means being smooth, being loud, and being predictable. Whether you’re showing up to our local Saturday morning smash-fest or a casual "coffee and carbs" cruise, mastering roadie etiquette makes the ride better for everyone!
1. Communication is King (and Queen!)
If you see something, say something! In a tight paceline, the riders in the back can’t see the road hazards until they’re right on top of them. You are their eyes and ears!
- Point out the potholes: North Carolina roads love to surprise us with a fresh gap in the asphalt. Don't just swerve! Point down at the hazard.
- "Car Back!": This is the golden rule. When a car is approaching from the rear, shout it out so the group can tighten up and ride single file if necessary.
- "Slowing!": If you’re coming up to a stoplight or a junction, yell it out before you actually hit the brakes.
- "On your left!": Always, always, ALWAYS announce yourself when passing. Nobody likes a jump scare when they’re in the zone!

2. The Golden Rule of Predictability
Surprises are great for birthdays, but they are HORRIBLE in a group ride. The goal is to move like a single, giant machine!
Hold Your Line: Don't weave! If you’re reaching for your water bottle or checking your computer, keep your bike straight. Sudden swerves cause a chain reaction behind you that can end in a "yard sale" (aka bikes and bodies everywhere).
No Sudden Braking: Try to modulate your speed by sitting up and catching more wind rather than grabbing a handful of brake. If you absolutely have to slow down quickly, yell "SLOWING!" or "STOPPING!" at the top of your lungs!
Standing Up Gracefully: When you stand up to climb or stretch your legs, your bike naturally "kicks back" about 6 inches. To the person drafting you, it feels like you just slammed on the brakes! The pro move? Give it a little extra pedal stroke as you stand to maintain your momentum and keep that gap consistent.
3. Thou Shalt Not Half-Wheel
We’ve all ridden with that person. You’re supposed to be riding side-by-side, but they keep pushing their front wheel just six inches ahead of yours. You speed up to match them... they speed up again.
This is Half-Wheeling, and it’s the ultimate etiquette "no-no."
It ruins the spacing for everyone behind you and turns a social ride into a weird, passive-aggressive race. Match your partner’s handlebars! If you’re feeling extra strong, take a longer pull at the front of the paceline instead of torturing your riding buddy.

4. Gear That Keeps You (and the Group) Safe
You can have the best road bikes in the world, but if your gear isn't dialed for safety, you're doing it wrong!
The Garmin Varia Radar: Ask anyone at the shop: the Garmin Varia is the single greatest piece of safety tech invented in the last decade. It’s a rearview radar that syncs to your head unit or phone and tells you EXACTLY when a car is approaching from behind. In a group, having even one person with a Varia makes the whole group safer because we know exactly when to call out "Car Back!"
Check out our Garmin selection to see how we track our metrics and safety!
A Quiet Bike is a Safe Bike: If your chain is squeaking, your gears are skipping, or your brakes are rubbing, you’re a distraction. More importantly, a mechanical failure at high speeds is dangerous! Before you head out, make sure your machine is in top shape.
Searching for "bike repair near me" in Davidson or Huntersville? Look no further! If you’d rather leave the wrenching to the pros, schedule a service appointment and bring it into us. We’ll make sure your shifting is crisp and your bike is silent!

5. Dream Machines: The Specialized Tarmac & Cervelo Soloist
Let’s be honest: half the reason we ride in groups is to drool over each other's bikes. If you’re looking to lead the pack, you want a bike that’s as fast as it looks!
- Specialized Tarmac: This is the benchmark. It’s light, it’s aero, and it handles like it’s on rails. Whether you’re sprinting for a town line or climbing a local kicker, the Tarmac is pure speed.
- Cervelo Soloist: A legend reborn! The Cervelo Soloist is the perfect "Goldilocks" bike: light enough for the mountains but aero enough to slice through the wind when you’re taking your pull at the front. It’s designed specifically for the privateer racer and the serious club rider.

6. The "No-Drop" Philosophy
At Spirited Cyclist, we love speed, but we love community more! If it’s a "No-Drop" ride, that means exactly what it says. We wait at the tops of hills, we help with flats, and we make sure everyone gets home safely.
If you’re the strongest rider that day, don't just hammer off the front! Use that energy to go to the back and pull a struggling rider back into the draft. That’s what being a true Roadie is all about.

7. Maintenance is Manners
Don't be the person who shows up with a flat tire or a skipping derailleur! It’s basic etiquette to show up with a bike that is road-ready.
Pro-Tip: Check your tires for glass or cuts the night before. Lube your chain. Make sure your Garmin is charged!
If you’re overdue for a tune-up, don't wait until the morning of the ride! Use our Service Request Form to get on the calendar. We’ll get you in and out so you don't miss a single mile.
A Friendly Reminder...
We live for the ride just as much as you do! That’s why Spirited Cyclist is CLOSED on Sundays and Mondays.
Why? Because we’re out there "Product Testing" (aka riding our bikes until our legs fall off)! We need that time to recharge, explore the local gravel, and maybe engage in a little friendly competition ourselves. We’ll be back in the shop on Tuesday, ready to hear all your ride stories and fix whatever you broke over the weekend!
